Conservatives in the village? True story.
So I found out where all the conservatives hangout in downtown Manhattan-in Greenwich Village. Yes, “the village” where the gay rights movement was created and where I thought only more liberal-minded folk hangout, there is indeed a safe haven for the 23ish conservatives who live downtown.
Since I moved to Manhattan over three years ago, I have been “church shopping.” I was fortunate enough to come from a really great church upstate and I only had positive religious experiences in college and (I know, shocking) I even led a bible study for three years. Contrary to popular belief, I did not spend all of college drunk.
Anyway, a few months ago, I thought I stumbled upon a gem on my way to boozy brunch one Sunday. The Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village. The church professed a mission of service and good music so I obviously jumped on board. Upon entering, I immediately felt a bit uncomfortable. I had hoped to find preppy young families, adorable gay men, and maybe even a cute guy, not so much.
Within roughly 75 seconds, the pastor who already gave me the willies, managed to discuss how sinful we all are and the following folks are clearly on the fast track to hell as they lead lives that are “impenitent”
-fornicators
-homosexuals
-thieves
-drunkards
The list was actually longer, but I will stop there. I realized immediately (ie before he began a brief diatribe against homosexuality) that I did not belong in this place and to use the words of LP, I needed to blow this popsicle stand.
I mean, most of my friends (and me) fall into one of the above categories on any given day of the week and I’m pretty sure we aren’t on a fast track to hell.
If we are, at least we can say we are having a good time:)
